As a licensed marriage and family therapist since 1987, I have spent many years working with first responders, fire fighters, comm operators and veterans. Many couples struggle with common relationship issues as noted in the "couple trifecta": communication, sex/intimacy and finances. The good news is these are skills, which means they can be learned, improved and modified. Clients typically seek therapy when they sense something is wrong. Using a family systems approach can help inform us as to why we act certain ways and learn how to take steps to improve our current circumstances. Changing how we think can open the door to improved relationship health.
People do what they know, until they know differently. Often we learn how to be in relationships based on the "family" who raised us: which may not have been ideal. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families struggling with marital issues, parenting concerns, addictions, co-dependency, trauma, depression, anxiety and life transitions.
Clients sometimes struggle with the "stigma" of going to therapy. There is no shame in seeking help, the shame is in the suffering. Taking the first step can feel like a giant leap, yet it could yield positive results. Don't continue to suffer, make the call today.
I received my master's degree from Syracuse University in marriage and family along with a bachelor's degree from the Pennsylvania State University. Beside three decades of work in the first responder community, I worked with adolescent girls in a group home setting, provided case management at Catholic Charities for at risk families and offered family therapy in a Family Practice medical group.
